Cheman Baira A'gitok

Hi! I'm Cheman

I am a PhD student in Linguistics at McGill University. My main research is in theoretical phonology, with an emphasis on prosodic structures and how they are mapped from syntax. I work primarily on the phonology of Garo (my native language), and I have additional interests in Banawa and Popti'.

Based in Montreal. Open to collaborations and feedback — feel free to get in touch.

Projects

Phonology of Garo

I investigated the acoustics of word prosody of Garo in my MA at Calgary under the supervision of Dr. Angeliki Athanasopoulou. In my PhD (which is ongoing), I have mostly focused on the phonological side of prosodic words in Garo. I analyzed the progressive gemination process and word internal phonotactics for my first QP. For my second QP, I analyzed the rhythmic deletion of the glottal stop in Garo.

MA work (Calgary) & doctoral research (McGill)

Banawa

I am interested in the VV sequences in Banawá and the related issue of syllable integrity in the language.

Other interests

Popti'

I am interested in the issue of linearization of the focus particle in Popti'. I got introduced to the issue in Syntax 4 with Dr. Jessica Coon.
